As a different type of challenge than my other projects at the time, I designed and created a kinetic sculpture that was purely aesthetic and was not developed from any predetermined criteria. I also experimented by including an 1800’s design feel to the piece. Awards: Octagon Art Show, SUB Art Show
The plan view is an optical effect created by the two discs spinning in opposite directions. The pistons also traverse opposite one another by a pin connected to the gears in the base.
By using non typical mechanical movements, the observer is compelled to study the piece and experience it rather than just glancing at it. I modeled this piece in an engineering software called Solid Works to help check clearances and motion.
